Installing DivorcewareNJ under Vista:

The Vista version of Microsoft Windows puts many restrictions on how programs may perform. One of these is that it does not allow data files to be updated if they are located under the \Program Files folder.

If you installed DivorcewareNJ anywhere other than under \Program Files, then you are ok. You don't need to change anything.

If you have successfully installed DivorcewareNJ on your Vista computer, and if you installed it into the C:\Program Files\DivorcewareNJ folder, then Vista automatically created a copy of the C:\Program Files\DivorcewareNJ\Data sub-folder into a folder similar to C:\Users\yourname\AppData\local\VirtualStore\Program Files\DivorcewareNJ. So, it looks like you have two copies of the data. You will notice that, in the C:\Program Files\DivorcewareNJ\Data folder, the file dates are old, while the dates are recent for the data files under C:\Users\yourname\AppData\local\VirtualStore\Program Files\DivorcewareNJ\data.

Here is what you should do:

  1. If you have DivorcewareNJ running, you must exit from the program before doing the following steps.

  2. If you have already created some cases in DivorcewareNJ, then rename the folder C:\Users\yourname\AppData\local\VirtualStore\Program Files\DivorcewareNJ to become C:\Users\yourname\AppData\local\VirtualStore\Program Files\DivorcewareNJOLD, instead. If you cannot find the AppData folder: left-click on the Users folder, click on Organize (at the top), choose Folder & Search Options, click View (at the top), click Show hidden files & folders, and click Ok. If you have not saved any data in the past, then you may skip this step.

  3. In Windows Explorer, carefully drag the C:\Program Files\DivorcewareNJ folder directly to the C:\ drive, so that it becomes C:\DivorcewareNJ. After moving everything, the C:\Program Files\DivorcewareNJ folder should no longer exist. If it is still there, you did something wrong.

  4. Right-click on the C:\DivorcewareNJ folder. Left-click on Properties. Click Read-only to make the box empty. Click OK. Click OK again.

  5. If you have a desktop icon for DivorcewareNJ, ...
    1. [a] right-click on it and choose "properties"
    2. [b] change the "target" to C:\DivorcewareNJ\DivorcewareNJ.exe -t
    3. [c] change "start in" to C:\DivorcewareNJ
    4. [d] click on "change icon" and set it to C:\DivorcewareNJ\DivorcewareNJ.ico
    5. [e] click "ok" then "ok" again, and click the next "ok"

  6. Find DivorcewareNJ on your Start menu | All Programs list, right-click on it, choose "properties", and do the same things to it as you did in the previous step.

  7. At this point, although the program exists in only one place, it is probable that your data exists in two places. This needs to be cleaned up. Run DivorcewareNJ and see if your cases are listed. If everything looks ok, then you are done. Otherwise, go to the next step.

  8. Make a backup copy of your data: Create a folder called DataBackup somewhere, and copy (not move) the C:\DivorcewareNJ\Data folder to it.

  9. Copy the data files (there will be either 1, 3, or 6 files) from C:\Users\yourname\AppData\local\VirtualStore\Program Files\DivorcewareNJOLD\Data to the new
    C:\DivorcewareNJ\Data
folder. Any files ending with .tbk or .bak or .tmp should be deleted, first. If it asks you to confirm the copying, you want to "Copy & Replace" all of the files. If there is also a CIS folder, do this again, copying the CIS folder.

  10. Now, run DivorcewareNJ, and see if your cases are there. Bring up one of your cases, make a small change to it, and save it. Exit from DivorcewareNJ, start it up again, and see if the change that you just made to the case is still there. If this works ok, then everything is fixed
